Th History of Horror Films

Our first research task is to find out about the history of horror films. This is vital and will help you to see how horror films have developed throughout the years. You, as producers of a teen horror film opening for 2017, have to have knowledge of horror film history.

Our good friends at www.best-horror-movies.com have compiled a list of the top 51 villains from horror films throughout the ages.

You can take a look at these characters by CLICKING HERE.

Each of you will be given a specific time period to research. You will be the 'expert' for this era.

The time periods are as follows:

  1. Pre-1930
  2. 1930s and 1940s
  3. 1940s and 1950s
  4. 1960s
  5. 1970s
  6. 1980s
  7. 1990s
  8. 2000 onwards
Homework Task (For Assessment)

Deadline : 10:55am Wednesday 5th October

Produce a piece of detailed research evidence entitled
The History of Horror Films : A Journey Through Time

There are some set rules for this:
  • This is individual research. You worked in groups for your preliminary task but we will not move into groups for the main task until the research phase has been completed.
  • It must meet the key words of the marking criteria for a level 4 piece of research. Those words are complete,detailed and excellent.
  • It must be presented creatively. Powerpoint is NOT allowed. Neither is an essay style post to your blog. I would advise using Prezi.
  • You are not allowed to cut and paste other people's research. It has to be your own work...
I have posted below some sources to help you conduct your research. This is only a starting point - there is loads of stuff out there for you.

Source One
Vist the site Horror Film History by clicking here. This site has lots of information - too much for you to cut and paste - and makes good reading. The site does not, however, venture much past the early 2000s in its information...

Source Two

Empire magazine is devoted to film and has a great section on its website entitled 'Horror Through the Decades'. You can view what they have to say by clicking here. Their coverage of the genre begins with the 1950s.

Preliminary Task : Location, Casting, Shot List and Filming Schedule

I went through the slides below in our lesson today.

All of this work needs to be evidenced on your individual blogs by the start of our lesson on Monday 26th September.

If there is a Blogger symbol like the one below on a slide, this means a post to your blog is required.

Preliminary Task : First Ideas

Foundation Portfolio : What Is It?

50% of your grade will be earned through your Foundation Portfolio. This consists of a preliminary task and a main task, the details of which can be found below.

The Preliminary Task is designed to illustrate the processes of pre-production, production and post-production that will be required, albeit in more detail, when you come to undertake the Main Task. The Preliminary Task is not marked but MUST be completed and submitted alongside the Main Task to the examiner. If it is not completed, marks are deducted from your Main Task.

The Main Task is marked out of 100. These marks are broken down as follows:

20 marks - Research into similar media products and planning of your own media product.
60 marks - Construction of your own media product including filiming and editing.
20 marks - Evaluation of your own media product.

All of your work must be posted to your blog as this will be accessed by the examiner in May of 2016.

For each of the criteria above, marks are available in 4 levels with level 4 being the highest.

The progress thermometer below shows the key words for each level of the mark scheme.

This is what you have to do:

Preliminary Exercise
Continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue. This task should demonstrate match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule.
Main Task
The titles and opening of a new teen horror film, to last a maximum of two minutes.
All video and audio material must be original, produced by the candidate(s), with the exception of music or audio effects from a copyright-free source. Both preliminary and main tasks must be completed as a group. Maximum four members to a group.

Entry Task : What Have You Learnt?

In the comment box below this post, tell me 3 things you know how to do now that you didn't know 2 weeks ago?

Basic Media Terminology

Make a post on your blog with the same title as this one : Basic Media Terminology

You were asked to watch the 4 OCR videos.

In your post, do the following without watching the videos again!

  1. Make a list of basic media terminology you were introduced to in the video about camera shots.
  2. Make a list of basic media terminology you were introduced to in the video about camera angles.
  3. Make a list of basic media terminology you were introduced to in the video about camera movements.
  4. Explain the 180 degree rule in your own words.

Here is a slide with the basic terminology you need to know and be able to use:

...and here is an explanation of the 180 degree rule:

The 180° rule is a cinematography guideline that states that two characters in a scene should maintain the same left/right relationship to one another . When the camera passes over the invisible axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line and the shot becomes what is called a reverse angle.

Make sure that you have these on your blog.

Task 1 : Setting Up Your Blog

This is your teaching blog.

A blog (short for web log) is a kind of online diary. This is where I will publish content from our lessons and where you need to come to see what we have been doing and see details of tasks that have been set in class.

When you have learnt how to use your blog you will be able to post images, powerpoint presentations, videos and other stuff to show evidence of your work.

Your blog is very important as it will be looked at by the examiner to assess your progress.

Your first task as a student of Media Studies is to set up your own blog.

  • When asked to enter an address for your blog you MUST use the following format:
joebloggskba.blogspot.com

AS Media Studies Transition Task

Subject: Media Studies

Qualification/Level: Advanced Subsidiary

Examination Board: OCR

The following task/ tasks are to be completed and taken to your first lesson in this subject in  September.

The Task

Why Study The Media?

The Media is everywhere in our modern world; in our homes, on our computer screens, on phones and even appearing on our wrists. Previously, the media were based on an analogue environment, with TV, film and many written forms of media (like newspapers and magazines). But, in the ‘Digital Age’, it’s impossible to tell the difference between one type of medium and another.

In your investigation of the question you should refer to:

  • Examples of media e.g. TV/the Internet/newspapers etc.
  • Specific examples of media texts e.g. TV programmes/websites/films etc.
  • Facts/statistics about the Media to back up your points
  • Examples of events/news stories linked to the Media
  • The views of important people who comment on the media about this subject

You can consider:

  • The impact of the Media on young people
  • The effect of too much Media on skills like communication and socialisation
  • What it was like in the past and what it might be like in the future

How the work produced will fit into subsequent work and the specification
as a whole

Throughout the Media Studies course we will consider the effect that the media’s representation of particular social groups has upon their collective identity.

How the work should be presented

Your response should be in the form of an essay consisting of at least 500 words.

How the work will be assessed and marked

This task will be assessed according to Assessment Objective 4 : Demonstrate the ability to undertake and apply appropriate research.

Students who achieve A/B grades characteristically meet the following criteria:

a) communicate an understanding of research skills and appropriate methods;

b) present relevant research findings or conclusions;

c) produce a reflective evaluation of the process and its outcomes.

Students who achieve E/U grades characteristically meet the following criteria:

a) communicate an understanding of research skills and methods;

b) present research findings or conclusions;

c) comment on the research process or its outcomes.

In Media Studies, the quality of written communication is taken into account in assessing your work. In the completion of this task you must:

  • ensure that text is legible and that spelling, punctuation and grammar are accurate so that meaning is clear;
  • select and use a form and style of writing appropriate to purpose and to complex subject matter;
  • organise information clearly and coherently, using specialist vocabulary when appropriate.

Success criteria

  • Write in a coherent and structured way
  • Use Standard English appropriately
  • Use technical terms about the Media correctly
  • Write factually and accurately, backing up your points with well-references sources
  • Include a bibliography (websites, books, etc)

Resources to be used

The best resource to use is the internet BUT beware! The internet is a great starting point for research but should be used with thought and consideration.

You will find lots of opinions from other people but your essay must be your own opinion.

Who to contact if you should require further assistance with the work before

the end of term
